Istria offers Croatia’s most advanced gastronomic scene. A wide variety of natural ingredients and a harmony of sea and inland make a perfect base for outstanding cuisine. From early spring until late autumn you can enjoy seasonal delicacies: wild asparagus, mushrooms, truffles, “Boscarin” beef, sausages, prosciutto… On the seaside, throughout the year there is fresh quality fish and a vast variety of seafood. A special focus should be put on Istrian high quality extra-virgin olive oil, with many brands already listed in world famous Flos Olei guide. And finally - no meal is complete without a glass of superb local wine - try authentic sweetness of white Malvasia and bold bitterness of red Teran, with a Muscat to join any dessert and finalize your gastro experience!
Although Istrian gastronomy is still best known for its authentic taverns and local food prepared in a traditional way, there is a significant scene in the rise - high class restaurants and five-star chefs. With a choice of superb local ingredients and a touch of modern culinary skills, it is no wonder they produce magic on the plate! Istria has one Michelin-star restaurant (Monte in Rovinj) alongside with 13 Michelin recommendations. It is also a region in Croatia with most JRE restaurants - six, which is almost half of total number in Croatia. It is also well represented in Gault & Millau and Magnar Ben guides. On a nearby Opatija Riviera, within a 45 minute drive, there are also numerous top class restaurants, like Plavi Podrum, Draga di Lovrana or Bevanda.
